Overview
Transfer to manufacture and full manufacturing of the Bedfont Scientific NOxBOXi and GastroCH4eck
“Bedfont have built a good working relationship with ITL whilst creating two of our most successful product launches to date. Given the nature of our specialist medical products it is essential that we have the best manufacturing partner on board. Our working partnership with them is very much on-going with the prospect of more new projects in the future”
Jason Smith, General Manager at Bedfont Scientific
Requirements
Following ITL’s first project with Bedfont, the positive market reaction to the NoxBOXi meant that orders were soon placed and they now needed to scale up to full manufacturing.
Our Approach
The collaborative approach taken to manufacture the pre-production units of the NOxBOXi continued during transfer to manufacture.
Once again ITL’s manufacturing and production engineering team worked alongside the R&D team at Bedfont in order to transfer the NOxBOXi into manufacture as efficiently as possible.
This included:
- Ensuring that the bill of materials (BOM) was fully up-to-date and accurate following further design changes
- Sourcing and supply chain
- Management for many of the components
- Detailing test procedures
- Setting up the dedicated manufacturing work-cell
- Compiling detailed works instructions
ITL also installed a bespoke, controlled gas testing room within their factory to accommodate customer acceptance testing of the device.
This involved significant investment as well as risk assessment and the implementation of health and safety protocols.
Results
Bedfont now have a full production cell within ITL’s factory and place regular orders for their device. During the relationship ITL have supported Bedfont with the introduction of further design improvements whilst ensuring the continuous supply of units.
This is achieved through the use of an engineering change request system with full documentation- something that is crucial for regulatory compliance where medical devices are concerned.
More recently, Bedfont have introduced another product, the GastoCH4eck Gastrolyzer into manufacturing at ITL.
This is a system used to detect gastro-intestinal disorders such as lactose intolerance and bacterial overgrowth.
